Autumn Lawn Care Tips
Just because the summer's over and your yard is covered with leaves doesn't mean it's time to quit for the year. Here are four tips to give your yard a better start for next year.
- Mow it with a mulching mower. Forget raking and bagging them! Put all those dead leaves to work just like you would grass clippings. They will decompose over the course of the winter and provide nutrients for next year.
- Aerate. After a summer of running around the yard, barbecues, kiddie pools, football games, and every other yard activity, your soil is probably compacted. Buy, rent, or hire an aerator. It will loosen the soil so grass roots can grow better during their dormancy.
- Fertilize. It's simple enough. Go down to Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Ace, GF Lumber, Sears, or maybe even the Re-store and buy a bag of winterizing fertilizer. It's a specialized formula for the cold months. And as always, the Yard Whisperer recommends you buy an organic fertilizer.
- Pick up poop. If you have a dog or cat or whatever, and haven't been removing poop from your yard, now is the time. Mowing them and soaking them with the hose may do the trick, but if your cat's crap has fused itself to the ground, it may be time to rake them up and either compost them, or al least bury them in the garden. If you don't, you could have spots in the yard of either bright green grass or dead grass. Even if you have the bright green kind, it'll look like the yard is unevenly fertilized (because it is). Like a cow pasture in the spring where grass thrives around a cow pattie.
