Cursed Earth

So I have this little patch of backyard (so to speak) that seems to suck the life out of any tree I plant there...(again, so to speak). I'm trying to build up a larger sound barrier between my house and the airport. Especially since now they will have F-15s. But every tree and shrub I transplant dies a horrible agonizing death of parched leaves, cell walls, and membranes. Or, it could be that there is a pocket of time-space around the tree where it's always autumn... thus the falling leaves. I've tried a poplar, a cotton wood, and a lilac. I don't think a bamboo would fare to well, or accomplish the ultimate goal of sound dampening. So like pigs to the slaughter go these trees, and they will have to continue until one of them gets it right. Maybe I'll plant corn there and put two dead fish at the bottom of every hole. I'm not asking for recommendations or planting tips. I just want you all to know that I'm kiling trees. I die a little inside every time another one passes on to the beyond. I guess if I really wanted a high chance of success, I'd plant a successful native plant. How about a Russian Olive? Thoughts?
